My teachers all focused on the kids with half my IQ number, the average kids did fine with the curriculum optimized for their needs, and people like me were assumed to be okay without special attention. It's just not true.

Without challenges, without friends of comparable intelligence who we can relate to, people sqy me just shut down. But the biggest problem I had with the book is the fact that the high IQ kids are portrayed as lacking any creativity this is reinforced by all characters and by the plot. This is extremely problematic because it stems from an undeserved stigma that associates science and high intelligence with uncreativity. And that is, for lack of a better word: The central premise of the novel precludes the possibility — nay, the reality — that it takes creativity to be in the sciences or related subjects. That brilliant economists like John Nash or Adam Smith, or that Watson, Crick and Franklin in their discovery of the double helix structure of DNA have not an iota of creativity in their being?

Ultimately, I think MG kids would enjoy this book immensely and as I said some really good points are made. Those are all inarguably good things, from my perspective, and mentioning them would humanize these two scholars. I wish there were a little more of that in this book, but the need to cut details to keep the book from becoming an encyclopedia is understand- able. Kaufman, with the major counterpoint being that the fields of special education and gifted education have tried to reform themselves, with some success: Definitions are broader, testing procedures and practices are more refined and inclusive, and interventions are more broadly targeted.
